Golden Eagle, Baraga County

Last weekend, Bonnie and I took a road trip to the western Upper Peninsula, as our niece Karin that lives in Hancock is starting a new job out in Colorado and we wanted to see her before she heads out to the mountains. On the trip west from Munising we noted that the Common Ravens are pairing up in preparation for the coming breeding season, as we saw several pairs sitting in trees along M-28 and US-41. Quite rare but Keweenaw Bay is not frozen in mid-winter and we observed six Trumpeter Swans right at the foot of the Bay.

On the return trip we again noted the Trumpeter Swans but also had good looks at a Golden Eagle soaring very low and slowly right along the foot of Keweenaw Bay and the highway, this on Saturday.

Sunday on the return trip home, we stopped near Pellston to see Amy our daughter and son in law Steve and observed our first of the winter season Northern Shrike on Ely Road, about two miles west of the Emmet County airport.

The weather and roads were not too good but thought it strange not to see any finches, snow buntings or crossbills in all that traveling in the Upper Peninsula.

Hope you and Bonnie are both doing well.
