We had a great weekend birding in the UP. Weather was weird (warm and sunny). We saw 6 Snowy Owls near Rudyard as well as a Northern Shrike and Snow Buntings. At Dunbar Forest we had a huge flock of Purple Finches, at least 3 dozen. There was also a HUGE flock of Pine Siskins of at least 80 if not lots more. At the Dafter Dump we had an adult Glaucous Gull and an immature Iceland Gull (lifer) along with the 100s of Herring Gulls, Ravens and Crows and dozens of eagles. Near Pickford we had some Horned Larks and a Lapland Longspur. Most surprising birds of the weekend were the Robins in Sault Ste Marie and 2 Red-winged Blackbirds at Dunbar. We finally (on the 3rd try) found Bohemian Waxwings at the Dafter Post Office. We also had some Evening and Pine Grosbeaks in various places. Sharp-tailed Grouse were in several places but mostly around feeders. We also had a couple of Ruffed Grouse and saw turkeys is several places.
On Thursday the straits were mostly frozen with a few open places with rafts of ducks (Redheads?) but on Sunday, it was mostly open water so the ducks were not visible from the bridge.
