Bonnie and I have not had too many special birds during this "lack of Winter Season, but today we had the best of the new year for us. While crossing the Mackinac Bridge we had a gray morph Gyrfalcon sitting on top of one of the light poles. It was about .3 mile South of the South Tower facing the Lake Michigan side of the Bridge. It was our best and up close look at a Gyrfalcon as the lighting poles must only be about twenty feet above the Bridge. In the past some twenty and thirty years ago we have observed them atop the Edison Soo power plant and RR Bridge Towers in the Soo and were even lucky enough to observe a pair on a nest on cliffs along the Dempster Highway in the Yukon Territory. But no binoculars or spotting scopes were needed for a good look today. It really made up for our many birdless drives and x-country ski outings this winter.

Great sighting Rick. Just noted that 321 Sandhill Cranes were sighted at Shiawassee NWR yesterday.

Getting Spring fever way too early !
