Bald Eagle and Barred Owls

Bonnie and I took our annual Autumn color tour trip to the Western Upper Peninsula over this past weekend. Even up there in most areas of the western UP, the colors were not peak yet, especially anywhere near Lake Superior. On our way west we stopped at the mouth of the AuTrain River to look for the American Avocet that had been reported there last Thursday morning. We had no luck with this bird but on the beach was an adult Bald Eagle. A common sight up there, but this one was perched upon a very large salmon that had washed up on the beach. We watched it for some time as the eagle would keep looking down on this big fish it was standing upon. It was not feeding and apparently it knew it was just too heavy to make even an attempt at carrying off. We were there twenty minutes and the bird did not seem to move any.

Very few birds on this trip but we did have a Barred Owl calling late night while we were tent camping at Presque Isle Campground on the west end of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Most interesting bird sighting or hearing was that when we got home and had just gotten out of the truck we heard a Barred Owl calling in the Beech tree right over the driveway, then another off in the distance called and for a few minutes they took turns calling back and forth to each other. Until the one right over head flew off to challenge or see the other bird. From the young barred owls we have been seeing at the house in the back yard, it appears they were quite successful at nesting this year.
