"Yard cranes"

My Bride and I were thrilled that our pair of Sandhills returned today. They waltzed right up to the front of the house and ate corn I tossed at them. This is the 12th or 13th year running for them.

Very nice to have Sandhill Cranes as a yard bird. We get American Turkeys and lots of squirrels when we put out the corn in mid to late winter for the turkeys. Up north at camp I put out some corn this winter in hopes of seeing the Snowshoe Hare up closer to the cabin. No Hare, but as soon as I put the corn out on the snow pack, within a few minutes the resident winter fed flock of turkeys showed up, followed by the Ring-neck Pheasants. Much colder up there in the Upper Peninsula and a snow pack of over three feet of snow, but turkeys and pheasants do well there as long as they are being fed by the locals. Most of the seed and corn though goes to the large flock of winter Blue Jays.
