Pike Lake-Luce County Birds

Bonnie and I went back up to the Upper Peninsula for a few more days of camping in the good weather before the bugs get real bad. For the first time since the Duck Lake Forest Fire of May of 2012 we camped at Pike Lake. We had some good birds during our stay. Common Loons were on the lake, along with a pair of Trumpeter Swans, the Eagles were on the nest in the swamp. A Black-backed Woodpecker worked through the campground. Common Snipe were winnowing and an American Bittern was calling mornings. At night we heard the Whip-poor-will and two Northern Saw-whet Owls calling.
We got out into the openings to search for the Sharp-tailed Grouse that have moved into the openings created by the forest fire and observed and flushed birds in two locations. We had Spruce Grouse in two locations in small pockets of Jack Pines that were missed by the fire. Best sighting was found by Bonnie when she located a territorial female Spruce Grouse calling from the ground, which allowed me to get a few photos before it flew up into a tree to continue calling from a more traditional calling perch.
Northern Luce County, Two-Hearted River Region.

Thanks Dale. We got up north to our old haunts before the bugs get too bad to be in the woods.

Very nice, Rick. Thanks for posting... I always loved the spruce grouse, associating them with WPBO.
