Shiawassee Refuge trail closure

Postby Steve Kahl » Sun Feb 24, 2013 1:00 am

Woodland Trail will be closed from February 25 to March 1 because we will be mowing large areas of brush along the trail. This mowing can be hazardous to people nearby. It is part of our program to reduce and control common buckthorn which is an invasive shrub introduced from Eurasia. Buckthorn crowds out native species and turns floristically diverse shrublands into a monoculture which provides very poor wildlife habitat. The guided cross-country ski tour is still planned for February 28.
