The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge auto tour route will be open to the public starting Saturday, June 1, 2013. The Wildlife Drive will be open from sunrise to sunset, seven days per week until October 4. The route will be open from 1:00pm to sunset October 5 - 25.
A change this year will be the closing of the ENTRANCE gate one half-hour before sunset. This gate previously closed at sunset when the Wildlife Drive officially closed for the day. However, we had a problem last year with people entering the refuge just before the gate closed and staying far late after sunset. The exact opening and closing times for the Wildlife Drive will be posted at the entrance to avoid any confusion for visitors.
We will also establish a "no stopping zone" for a half-mile stretch on either side of the eagle nest. The refuge has determined that this pair will typically tolerate a passing vehicle and not fly away. However, they will usually perceive a greater level of danger when a vehicle stops and will flee. If a person exits a vehicle they will almost invariably flee. The refuge will monitor the reaction of the eagles. If we find they are being kept from the nest by passing visitors we will close the Wildlife Drive until the eaglet fledges. Please help us make our eagles feel safe by complying with the no stopping zone.
