Shiawassee NWR adds 180 ac - birding opportunity

Postby Steve Kahl » Mon May 20, 2013 2:42 pm

Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge grew by 180 acres this week!!! The new tract is located along the east side of Miller Road, from Hart Road to Swan Creek. The area is a very large, open grassland mixed with small wetlands. The site was historically a mix of emergent marsh and wet prairie and the refuge will work to restore these habitats further.

Wildlife observation is available along Miller Road, which is a seasonal County road. It is a good location for birdwatchers to find nesting Grasshopper Sparrows and wintering Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. Last year this site harbored nesting Dickcissels. Large numbers of ducks, geese, swans and Sandhill Cranes use the shallow wetlands, especially in spring migration. It is also an excellent viewing area for White-tailed Deer. A parking lot is located at the south end of Miller Road on the Shiawassee River State Game Area. This acquisition was funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

If you would like to see a beautiful photo of a male Dickcissel that accompanies this post on our Facebook page, go to http://www.facebook.com/ShiawasseeNWR. Like us and follow us on Facebook to learn more about the refuge.

Thank you for your interest!
