When: September 20th - 21st
Where: Charlevoix-Beaver Island
What: Birding To, From, and On Beaver Island
Join Brian Allen and Darrell Lawson on a birding adventure! Beaver Island is an underbirded area with great potential for fall migrants and perhaps even a western rarity or two. September is also a great time for pelagic birds on the Great Lakes. This adventure combines the two! It provides two opportunities to view pelagic birds and ample opportunities to look for fall migrants on the island. An itinerary of events is as follows:
Saturday Morning: The Emerald Isle leaves from Charlevoix at 11:40 AM. The trip to Beaver Island will take approximately two and a half hours, which provides a great opportunity for viewing pelagic birds (no stopping or chumming).
Saturday Afternoon/Evening: Participants are free to do as they choose. Some options include:
Taking the Beaver Island Tour (package deal can be purchased with the ferry tickets) to learn about the Island's history and culture,
Take a Aerial Tour of the outer islands in the Beaver Island Archipelago (pricing information to be determined).
Bird on your own at the many hot spots along the Beaver Island Birding Trail (maps available at the community center).
Explore the Island's rich culture, history, botany, etc, on your own.
Simply relax and enjoy the town!
Early Sunday Morning: Pile in vans to be escorted to a couple of suspected migrant hot spots for guided field trips with Brian and Darrell.
Late Sunday Morning: Take the ferry back to Charlevoix at 11:30AM and enjoy a second opportunity for pelagic birding.
Note: There is no charge for this other than your own cost for travel, the ferry, lodging, food, and any activities you choose to participate in on your own time.
