Hi All, Well the 3rd annual Neebish/Dunbar CBC is in the books. A crew of eight fun and hardy people found a modest yet new record total of 40 species on the US side on December 27th. Three others participated from the extreme NW portion of St. Joseph Island on the Canadian side. They didn’t add any additional species but did bolster the overall finch numbers. From a birding standpoint, things were pretty tough. The troops did scrounge up a handful of expected northern specialties - Pine Grosbeaks, Bohemian Waxwings, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Snowy Owl. As usual, chickadees were the bird of the day with 459 being tallied. Non-northern birds of interest included Ring-necked Pheasant, Belted Kingfisher, Tundra Swans and Northern Saw-whet Owl. On the 28th we picked out several Glaucous, an Iceland and a Greater Black-backed Gull at the Rudyard dump. From there we made the trip over toward Tahquamenon Falls area where we grabbed a six pack of Spruce Grouse and Black-backed Woodpecker before the long (and snowy) drive back south.

Hopefully we can get some of you to participate next year. Check the photo sharing board for a couple of Spruce Grouse images.

Good Birding!
