Blue Spotted Salamander

Postby Rick Baetsen » Mon Jun 25, 2018 9:49 am

Forest succession was starting to take over the front yard of our camp in the central Upper Peninsula, so we did some work to reclaim a bit more of the opening. I was cutting brush and small trees with the new Lithium Battery chainsaw and Bonnie was picking up logs, brush and White Birch bark. Bonnie called me over as she had found a couple salamanders under a piece of birch bark. They were Blue Spotted Salamanders and I took a photo of one of them with the phone camera before we put them back under the bark. Under closer examination we noted that they have four toes on each front foot and five toes on each hind foot.

Such cool little creatures! Thanks!
We had a blue striped one on our back porch last year.... certainly looked exotic!
