We conducted Bonnie's North American Butterfly Association 4th of July butterfly count at Whitefish Point yesterday on July 3rd, it was the 25th year Bonnie has been doing the counts at Whitefish Point and Seney/Fox River. Like that of the wildflowers, especially the orchid species the flight dates are now ahead of schedule by a couple weeks. So this year we got butterflies that we normally do not get as typically we are before their normal flight dates. This year we had more than a couple hundred Pink-edged Sulphurs, Atlantis Fritillaries, and record count numbers of Purplish and Bog Coppers. Attached are a couple images of the very small Coppers taken with a macro lens in the blowing winds. Due to the mid-afternoon heat of 87-95F the butterflies were not opening or fanning so only side views.
