Fall Colors 2015

Fall Colors 2015

Postby MikeW » Sat Oct 10, 2015 9:56 pm

Well, I got back from Sweden last week for work and based on all the online reports it sounded like peak color would hit the Pictured Rocks/Munising area this weekend...so here I am on the road again :) got here late last night and went to Tahquamonen Falls this morning. It has some color around the falls but it is not peak yet...probably a week or so out.

The Lake Superior shoreline is showing some color too but it is even behind Tahquamenon. From what I was told tonight by a very trusted source (a professional photographer that I've taken a couple seminars from and who has been leading fall color trips/workshops in this area for 35 years), the colors are peak on the smaller inland lakes. So I am going to check those out tomorrow morning.

I will post some photos the middle of the week if I get any that are worth posting. I've got a couple more days here, so hopefully I will hit the fall color jackpot before I have to head home.

Please feel free to tack on to this thread and report what you are seeing in your areas...there is a lot of time left this fall to get some really nice photos and it always helps to know where the colors are good.

Have a great rest of the weekend,
Mike

Thought I would post an update for anyone interested in the fall colors.

The info I got last night was spot on :W the in land lakes are peak color and just beautiful! I got some really nice reflection shots this morning and some great shoreline color with Birch trees mixed in too. Really some exciting color right now. Should last a few more days in land, then start heavy on Lake Superior and east of here toward Tahquamenon. So next weekend will be good for anyone interested in making the trip.

Found a few new spots this afternoon when scouting while the sun was high and bright, so heading there in the morning...hoping for another good day..

Good night,
Mike

I am not sure what I did will work, if it didn't I guess we are stuck with the 2016 title.

Thanks Sandy. Photos coming soon. Did some lighthouse photography on Saturday and the 'birds of prey' shoot at the Howell Nature Center on Sunday, so have not had time to process the RAW files yet. Will do that this week and get some posted. I wish I had been able to go back up to Tahquamenon Falls this weekend because I heard they had about 5" of snow and that would have been really unique with peak colors.

Well, seems I only find time late at night to do any processing, but since it is getting darker earlier now maybe that will change. Here are some of the fall color shots I was able to get near the inland lakes and other areas where the trees were almost peak. The Superior coast had not really started to change yet. There were some really nice colors but it was also very windy most of the time, so while the color is really nice the trees are not super sharp in some of the photos where there was just no way to get away from the wind...but you have to take what you are dealt by good ol Mother Nature sometimes ;)

I hope you enjoy the photos.

Hike Lake at mid-day. I got invited by a local photographer that I met to follow him and his friend in their ATV while they went to a few lakes well off the beaten path...probably have a few new scratches in my truck, but I just can't pass up a good opportunity.

Last ones...

2016OctFallColors-4359.jpg
Trying something different while getting rained on and waiting for the wind to let up. Did a 5 second exposure here and after 3 seconds zoomed out from 70mm to about 35mm while the shutter was still open. I kind of like the look of it, but it might not be for everyone.

Tahquamenon Falls on my way back home. It had much more color on the way back Tuesday than it had on the previous Saturday.

Have a great rest of the week. And if anyone is in an area where the color is still good or peak, please reply to this thread...I may make another trip this weekend if there are still some good spots to be photographed.

Take care,
Mike
