Yellowstone/Teton Trip

Postby MikeW » Mon Dec 12, 2016 6:18 pm

In late September/early October I went on a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons with Steve Gettle who I made the Costa Rica trip with earlier this past March. We had a great trip and saw a lot of wildlife...every day just seemed to be better than the last and since it started out with a good day, that made for a really great trip. Although not a lot of bird photography on this trip, I thought I would post some of the bird, animal and landscape photos from the trip while I'm stuck sitting here in the Detroit Airport. I hope you enjoy them.

Here are a few landscape shots

The Tetons - we saw them for a very limited time since storms moved in for the full 3 days we were there

A few more...

Pica-1566.jpg
These little Pika are quick and not that easy to find in the rocky areas they live in, but Steve knew a good spot and we managed to get some shots.

Bison-5252.jpg
I wish these two would have really been going at it and kicking up some dust, but I guess they were not in the mood for an all out fight.

Bighorn-3021.jpg
This Bighorn Ram did not care at all about having his photo taken

I will post some more later after I change the format so they will post correctly.
Thanks,
Mike

Here are a few more from the trip.

This is a geyser in the general area of Old Faithful with the Milkyway behind it.

Milkyway-6170.jpg
We got a clear night and were able to get some Milkyway photos

And then it went off...

Milkyway-6174.jpg
we light painted the water from the geyser with a flashlight so it would show up a bit better

MountainBluebird-0029.jpg
This little Mountain Bluebird was flying around the sage brush while we were taking some fall color photos and I was able to get close enough for a shot.

Some fall color on a partly foggy morning. We missed the peak of the color by a couple days. About 3 days prior to getting there they had a huge storm with 60mph winds and it pretty much took off all the leaves that had changed already expect for some protected areas.

While watching and waiting on a couple coyote's to do something beside sleep, we got lucky and these two cubs and their Mom came to the waters edge for a drink. They didn't stay long, but long enough for a few photos :D

I'll finish this off with a few Elk photos. I noticed that you can now click on the photos in a post and it brings it up full screen and a bit clearer than in the actual post. Not sure what changed but it seems to be a nice feature.

We went out specifically at sunset to see if we could get some silhouette photos of Elk and all I was able to get was this Cow Elk...sure would have been nice to have a big bull in this pose.

This bull was massive. He actually cost me the best sunrise photo of the trip because I didn't notice the color in the sky until it was too late because of focusing on him so intently.

I hope you enjoyed the photos. Also, if you are interested in a trip like this or a great birding trip check out http://www.stevegettle.com

Have a good week,

Good stuff Mike. We went in 2013 but caught the government shutdown that year. Your coyote shot is great. Both geysers are great but the second is fantastic. That would be on my wall. Good stuff all around. Alpin glow is cool to see isn't it? Wanted to see the bighorns but never found them. Great work
