Frigatebird--Anchor Bay St. Clair & Macomb countys

Postby Russ Emmons » Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:16 am

I just found about about this, was working on a couple of projects. Sunday the 19th, the bird was seen by several and photos were taken. It was first seen near Metro-Beach Metro Park and later at Anchor Bay at the foot of Palms Rd. which is just a short ways from our place! ;)

Magnificent Frigatebird Fregata magificens if this is the species that was seen, is one of the largest birds in the world with a 7.5 wingspan! It is a bird of the Gulf of Mexico and south Atlantic which feeds by skimming off the water!

I need to hustle down there and see it might be still there--doubtful tho, they cover huge areas!

We had one fly over here at home several years back (lifer) and I didn't report it at first, I didn't think anyone would believe it! ----until I mentioned it to Allen Chartier who jumped all over me for not reporting! My sighting was eventually accepted by the MBRC along with another seen near St. Clair Shores on Lake St. Clair (probably the same bird)
