Today (6/28/12) by coincidence, Karl Overman of Detroit Audubon was passing thru our Twp. looking for Dickcissels & by luck happened to spot a lone White Ibis less then 2 miles from our place in a drainage ditch in commercial farm fields. Photo(s) were taken which I've seen on Karls blog. This bird was seen in a very unlikely location and doesn't belong in this part of the country. White Ibis is a bird of Florida, the Texas & Gulf Coast. I didn't have my computer on until later in the evening so I missed the alert post. I easily could have buzzed over and saw this bird before it left.
I've a heads up to my kids who live in the area plus many local residents that might see it later. I will go tomorrow to check for it again. Many people are hoping to see this bird---will be a lifer for them & for me
I don't as a rule "chase" rare birds but right around the corner in my own neighborhood
