Spiranthes Orchids! Per Dale

Spiranthes is the second largest grouping of native orchids in Michigan. We will present 3 additional species : S. lacera var.
gracilis, S. tuberosa, and S. orchroleuca.

The first photo is Spiranthes lacera var. gracilis, or Southern Slender Ladies Tresse. Earlier we presented S. lacera var. lacera. This orchid differs from that one in that it strongly spirals up the spike rather than forming a single line up the spike. Both bloom at the same time in Michigan, and often together. Wonderful green color on the lower lip.
Dry acid soils. Pictured from Alger Co. 6"-26" tall.

Our second photo is Spiranthes tuberosa, or Little Ladies Tresse.
4"-23" tall. Pure white flowers are very minute and spiral up the spike. This was our last orchid to locate and photograph and one of our very favorites. This photo presented to show the profile and simple beauty of this wildflower. Pictured from a field in Van Buren Co. in some surface mosses and fine grass.

Our next photo is Spiranthes ochroleuca or Yellow Ladies Tresse.
Another difficult orchid to locate, this photograph is from Tuscola Co.
An orchid with a dainty profile, showing yellow on the under lip and throat. 4"-40" tall. Note the recurving of the dorsal sepal and lateral petals.
