Yesterday's Blue Jay

Postby PapaRon » Wed Jan 13, 2010 4:21 pm

It was.

Fed the birds and went back out about 30 minutes later to this.

We have an issue with a large female Cooper's hawk.

Must've been one heck of a fight, to leave thiskind of mess.

A tell tale sign, or the a hawk's signature.

Eeeeeeek! I just hate it when that happens! One hungry Coop! I have one that just seems to "float" thru the yard every day....no casualties....yet.

The top ones look more like dove feathers to me. Love the wing print in the snow. I too have a female Cooper's flitting through my yard again this winter. So far, she hasn't snagged a snack (that I know of). I also know that it's just a matter of time. Fun birds to see but not what I want to be feeding.

Blue feathers don't show blue if enough light isn't reflecting off them.

It was a Blue-jay. The white wing tips help.

This bird hangs out all the time.

I chased her away this morning hiding in a spruce near the feeders.

Great picture story Ron! Am I weird or what??? It doesnt bother me at all when one of my yard birds gets taken by A bird of prey, in fact I'd love to watch it happen!

I have to go with a Morning Dove for the Cooper's dinner. The feather with the white tip is one of the outer-most of the tail feathers. These are not visable (not as long as middle feathers) until the bird is flying or scattered around the yard like this one!
